FLATFOOT FLATBUSH is Brooklyn's first-ever flatfooting parade, celebrated as part of Make Music New York's Winter Solstice Celebration. 

 

On December 21st, for the twelfth year, the North Flatbush Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) teams up with Make Music New York and Porch Stomp to bring you Flatfoot Flatbush, an exciting year of music and dancing to celebrate community and the winter solstice.

Led by conductor James John, artistic director of the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble, singers will walk a route along Riverside Park making stops at the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument and other landmarks to sing medieval melodies once sung on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

Mobile Hallelujah - Dec 21st

 

Producer Melissa Gerstein and conductor Douglas Anderson team up again to lead “Mobile Hallelujah,” bringing the oldest continuously performed piece of Classical music to the streets of NYC. Participating singers will gather at seven popular midtown locations to sing the famously uplifting “Hallelujah Chorus” from George Fredric Handel’s Messiah, using their smartphones to keep in sync and in tune and surprising passersby with seemingly spontaneous outbursts of the most famous choral piece in history. New time updated to 2:00 PM Start Time.

Description: Join the NYC Parks Plant Ecology Center and Nursery (PECaN) for a hands-on seed cleaning workshop with the Seed Increase Program (SIP)! The SIP farms native seed for use in restoration projects throughout the five boroughs. The workshop will feature detailed demonstrations of seed cleaning techniques and equipment, along with discussion of seed collection, drying, testing, and storage practices. After this introduction, participants will have time for hands-on cleaning of both wild-collected and farmed seed lots. Please reach out to pecan@parks.nyc.gov in advance if you would like to bring your own seed for cleaning. Come prepared with long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Additional PPE will be provided, but expect to get a bit dusty!

NYC Beaches Open 2025

Parks maintains 14 miles of beaches. Beaches are open from Memorial Day weekend through September 7, 2025. During beach season, lifeguards are on duty daily, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections. Closed sections are marked with signs and/or red flags. All of our beaches are free and open to the public.

Pool Hours

Outdoor pool hours are from 11:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. daily, with a break for pool cleaning between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Our pools will remain open this summer for general swim. Pool hours will remain the same: 11: 00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Description: Join the Greenbelt Native Plant Center’s Seed Increase Program (SIP) to help maintain the production plots in our Staten Island farm fields. The Seed Increase Program propagates and grows plots of plants from locally sourced populations for ecological restoration projects across the city. We will be preparing the plots for spring and fall planting. Additional tasks include plots weeding, spreading mulch, and cutting back last year’s growth. Tools will be provided. No prior knowledge about plants or farming is required. Come dressed in sturdy boots or shoes, long pants, and clothing that can get dirty. Space is limited and registration is required.
